About Us
Simply put: a library for seeds. Our seed library works just like a regular library, except we lend seeds instead of books. The basic idea is that you borrow seeds and plant them, let some plants go to seed, and then return some of these next generation seeds to the library for others to borrow. You do not need a library card to borrow seeds (but you’ll want one to check out gardening books!) and there are no due dates or fines.
Visit the library events calendar or check back here for updates on gardening classes, volunteer opportunities, and other events. Questions about the seed library? Contact ssims@acplwy.org.
High Plains Seed Library Brochure (2024)
History
The original High Plains Seed Library was founded in 2016 by passionate members of the community whose drive and shared vision helped bring the seed library into being. Although it has gone through many iterations over the years, ACPL strives to maintain this valuable community resource with the help of patrons like you.
Volunteer with us
The High Plains Seed Library is unique among our collections at the library. We look to the community for help in maintaining the collection. Periodically, we may organize volunteer days to work on packaging seeds for the collection.
Presently, there is a packaging station on the table immediately to the left of the collection where we will periodically place seeds and the supplies to package them. We encourage you to check this area and help us get seeds packed for the collection.
We are also looking for folks who want to help in other ways: keeping the collection stocked, tidying, and seasonal inventory. If you are interested, or have other ideas/feedback please contact Shane Sims at ssims@acplwy.org.
How to Check Out Seeds:
- Pick out the seeds you want from the collection.
- Fill out the check-out sheet on clipboard on top of collection
- Take a check-in sheet to track your seedlings (optional)
- Go home and plant your new seeds.
- Remember to save seeds for yourself and consider returning some to the library!
How to Return Seeds
The seed library accepts donations of unused commercial seed as well as saved seeds. Please read the Donation Policy; it is short and important. Please note: commercially packaged seeds in their original packaging do not need donation slips.
We encourage you to save seeds according to your knowledge and level of experience.
Check-In slips are necessary for donations of saved seed. They can be found at the seed library or online here.
Seed saving workshops are offered by the High Plains Seed Library each year. The library also has reference materials on seed saving for check-out.
